Urban Operations: War, Crime, and Conflict at the UOPC

Urban operations demand serious study.  The text Urban Operations, War, Crime, and Conflict was well represented at the third iteration of the 40th Infantry Division’s Urban Operations Planners Course (UPOC) held at Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) Los Alamitos, California in both live and virtual sessions.

 The course, which was held 25-31 August 2024, is the only “for planners only” course geared for preparing for operations at the brigade and division levels. 

Urban Operations authors instructing at the course included Major Jayson Geroux, Royal Canadian Regiment and Major (retired) John Spencer,  Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point wrote the preface; Lt Col Andrew Craig, Royal Engineers, wrote the chapter on Subterranean Operations; Dr. Jacob Stoil, Associate Professor of Military History at the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) wrote the chapter on urban battles of October 7th in Israel and Gaza; while Dr. John P. Sullivan, is co-editor of the text and co-author of the chapter on virtual urban siege and swarming in Culiacán.

Previous UPOC instructors who contributed to the text include Dr. Anthony King, Chair of War Studies at the University of Warwick, who wrote the chapter on Artificial Intelligence and urban operations, and Sahr Muhammedally, U.S. Defense Security Cooperation University, who wrote the chapter on legal and policy approaches for civilian protection.
